LI padding/margin in Internet Explorer

While reworking my HTML in ClockingIT to support TaskList reordering with Drag and Drop, I ended up with some strange padding around empty LI’s used to make sure a tasklist never ends up empty (to work around a dropOnEmpty problem with Prototype/Scriptaculous). After several hours of trying just about everything, it seems IE decides that and empy LI needs to have some content after all, and that empty content makes IE refuse to set an height on the LI lower than the font-size inherited by the LI. Forcing

style="font-size: 1px; and line-height: 0px;"

on the empty LIs fixed the problem.

Spam, spam, spam…

As I get more and more spam, and Akismet is unable to catch it all, I’ve installed wp-hashcash which is a really good idea. I wish there was some similar functionality for phpBB, as my forum gets even more spam. And you don’t want to see my inbox, it’s horrible after a few years with email addresses listed on high traffic websites.

Almost there…

We’ve been hard at work lately and we’ve implemented a new design which we’re both very happy with. I’ve also ripped out domTT and created my own tooltips implementation, as domTT was way overkill and created all kinds of problems with stuck tooltips. I’ve also changed the ajax working indicator into something I think gives better and more natural feedback.

ClockingIT Tasks

We’re not quite ready to make a full announcement and bring in loads of people, but if you want to take it for a spin, it’s available at ClockingIT along with more screen-shots and information.

DivX 6.2.5 Released

DivX Shiny New Features
> We here at DivX like to spend our time making things work faster, better, and with some serious style. With that in mind we’ve just finished a whole bunch of work on the DivX decoder, including many performance quality enhancements that we know you’re going to love!

Got to say the sharpening looks pretty sweet. I just wonder how it’ll look on moving pictures instead of stills like they show on the webpage. And if my poor little PVR can mange.

Scandinavia pressures Apple’s iTunes

Scandinavia pressures Apple’s iTunes – Yahoo! News

> STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Denmark, Norway and Sweden plan to force Apple Computers Inc to break the exclusive link between its iPod music players and online iTunes store.

> The three Scandinavian countries have decided to take iTunes to their respective government mediators, or ombudsmen.

> At present, the only portable players able to play files downloaded form iTunes are Apple’s own iPods.

> “iTunes’ terms and conditions are illegal in all three countries,” Swedish Consumer Agency spokeswoman Marianne Aabyhammar told AFP Friday.

France tried doing the same thing and failed, so we’ll see how this pans out. Apple has quite a few lawyers, and I’m sure they’ve checked that what they’re doing in each country iTunes is available is legal.

Companies sue Sweden over Pirate Bay raid

The Local – Companies sue Sweden over Pirate Bay raid

> Ten companies which had their servers confiscated during the police’s raids against file-sharing site The Pirate Bay plan to demand compensation from the Swedish state.

> The companies say they will hand in demands for between 10,000 and 200,000 kronor each to the Chancellor of Justice in Stockholm on Wednesday, amounts that they say correspond to their losses following the raids.

Way to go. It’ll be very interesting to see how this all pans out. The Pirate Party in Sweden is gaining members and popularity, The Pirate Bay is still there, and Anti-Pirat Byraan shut down its website. Who’s going to win?

Microsoft clamps down on VistaTorrent.com

Microsoft clamps down on “vistatorrent” site | News.blog | CNET News.com

> With Microsoft having a tough time getting the Vista beta quickly into the hands of all those that wanted it, some folks thought they could help out.

> They set up vistatorrent.com, redistributing the code on their own.

> Microsoft’s response? Thanks, but no thanks. The company promptly slapped the site with a cease-and-desist letter.

I understand Microsofts reasoning, but I can’t understand why they don’t provide a torrent themselves. It would reall make downloading easier for a whole lot of people, and reduce costs for Microsoft.

RIAA Targets YouTube

broadband » News » RIAA Targets YouTube – Best not hum that ABBA song on video…

> The RIAA & MPAA are taking a strong interest in YouTube videos of copyrighted content the past few months, judging from activity in our forums. Users are increasingly receiving the same DMCA takedown request letters frequently dished out to ISPs, who forward them on to p2p users on their networks. Project Opus claims the warnings are even being applied to videos of amateur dancers who are getting their groove on to copyrighted music.

As filesharing is “contained”, no wonder they’re looking for other targets. Remember not to post any videos containing copyrighted music.

Google Browser Sync

> Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions.

More goodness from Google. They’ve been busy lately, but then, they’re always busy it seems. I frequently need something I’ve bookmarked at work when I’m at home, and vice-verca so consider it installed.

Dvorak admits pissing off Mac users for Ad-Revenue

Scripting News: 6/9/2006

> I was talking with Dvorak at the Vloggercon party this evening, and he started telling a story about how he deliberately pisses Mac users off to get flow for his stories, and I said, hold a minute, I want to record this, and shit if he didn’t stop and repeat it for me and my video camera.

Caught on tape. I’ve always thought his colums were a tad over the top, so I never really paid much attention to them. Deliberatly pissing off users to get the traffic they generate. Tsk, tsk.
