EdgyReleaseNotes - Ubuntu Wiki

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) has reached Release Candidate 1. Woot!

I’ve been running it on my desktop machine for a few weeks, without any problems at all. The upgrade was almost smooth as well, just had a bit of python hassle.

Ubuntu Dapper Drake RC 1

Monday, May 29th, 2006

The first release candidate version of Ubuntu Dapper Drake is available. The main focus of the RC is to test upgrading from Breezy Badger, and the process has been integrated into the update-manager. It does require a few hundred megabytes of downloading unless you grab the CD from one of the following mirrors:

Picasa for Linux

Picasa

Google has released Picasa for Linux, and even provides a .deb for Ubuntu. Installing it is as easy as downloading the archive from the above link, and typing the following in a terminal:

sudo dpkg -i /home/erlends/picasa_2.2.2820-5_i386.deb

It contains a copy of Wine and Gecko, so it comes at 21M, but it looks just like the windows version, and was able to import the photos from my Sony Ericsson w800i automatically when I plugged it in. Way to go Google, my parents just lost another reason to stay with Windows.

Sun flirts with Ubuntu: ZDNet Australia

Sun flirts with Ubuntu: ZDNet Australia: News: Software
> At JavaOne, both sides say they really like each other — suggesting a role for Ubuntu’s upcoming “Dapper Drake” operating system on Sun Microsystems’ servers.

> Ubuntu Linux got a ringing endorsement from Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz on Tuesday in San Francisco. In turn, Ubuntu project founder Mark Shuttleworth appeared on stage during Schwartz’s opening keynote at JavaOne to endorse Java.

It’s not set in stone, but this would be a really good thing. It seems like Ubuntu can do no wrong these days, and more and more people are jumping on the distribution. I can see why, I dropped my trusty FreeBSD in favor of Ubuntu after having used it for a while at work. Things just work, and seldom break — which they do a lot on other distributions (*cough* Gentoo cough). I also refuse to touch anything RPM based after using it for my first experiences with Linux. Source based distributions are nice, but they take way too long to upgrade if one of the core libraries change.

Just a couple of more weeks now until Dapper is final, and we can get official Xgl and Compiz packages which I can’t live without these days.

Sun Recasts Java Licensing for GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris Communities

Sun Recasts Java Licensing for GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris Communities
> SAN FRANCISCO, JAVAONE CONFERENCE, May 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), the creator and leading advocate of Java™ technology, today announced that Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) 5 is now available for redistribution by GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris(SM) operating system distributors under the new Operating System Distributor’s License for Java (also known as the “Distro License for Java” or DLJ).

About time! Getting and keeping Java current has been a major hassle every time I reinstall a system. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to manually download the j2sdk, make a package and install it. It’ll be interesting to see where Java ends up with the promise from Sun to open up more and more of the platform. Oh, it’s already in Dapper Multiverse.
