ATI Proprietary Linux Release Notes

> Resolution of an XGL startup issue that prevented users from starting XGL on display :0. Further details can be found in topic number 737-22841

Woho. No more fiddling with :1 to get Xgl running. If only they would support bigger than 2048×2048 blits I could actually finally start using it at work.

XM faces legal action from the RIAA - The Digital Music Weblog

> Although usually such good friends, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Satellite radio provider XM have just fallen out over a new portable digital music player and they’re airing their dirty laundry in public with a multi-million dollar law suit.

They’re fighting over a new device launched by XM which allows a user to save a song aired over the radio for later listening. The RIAA has sued XM for $150,000 per song downloaded to the device which amounts to quite a bit of money. Hopefully XM won’t sette and this goes to court, but that’s not very likely.

インターネットテレフォン「マウストーク」「VN-CX1」

Sony has launched a mouse that doubles as a Skype phone. Pure genious, if you ask me. I want one of those if they become available here in Norway, and support Linux.

Man sues Apple over potential hearing loss

> SAN FRANCISCO – A Louisiana man claims in a lawsuit that Apple’s iPod music player can cause hearing loss in people who use it.

> Apple has sold more than 42 million of the devices since they went on sale in 2001, including 14 million in the fourth quarter last year. The devices can produce sounds of more than 115 decibels, a volume that can damage the hearing of a person exposed to the sound for more than 28 seconds per day, according to the complaint.

Suing over a potential hearing loss if you’re stupid enough to play the music at top volume on your iPod. Yay for America.

Quote from bash.org:

> The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Nokia 770 Review - Mobile Gazette - Mobile Phone News

> We recently received one of the first Nokia 770 Internet Tablets to be released by Nokia - after giving it a thorough going over for a week, we decided it was type to share our findings with you!

Seems they had some networking problems, but other than that a pretty positive review. I’d love getting my dirty hands on one, but with my limited budget my only hope is getting my place of work to throw one after me. Here’s hoping…

Creative’s new Zen Vision:M (with video) - Engadget - www.engadget.com

Looks nice. 30Gb hard-drive, 4 hours of battery time when watching videos, 11 hours of listening to music, supports MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, WMV, and MJPEG. 2.5 inches 320×200 color screen. Doesn’t list the audio formats it supports, but I’m sure it’s good enough. Maybe it’s time to swap out my aging player?

Microsoft sued over alleged Xbox 360 glitch - Yahoo! News

> LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Chicago man who bought Microsoft Corp.’s new Xbox 360 has sued the world’s largest software maker, saying the new video game console has a design flaw that causes it to overheat and freeze up.

Microsoft has launched a product which is flawed? Where’s the news in that?

How to bypass US IVR systems

Friday, November 25th, 2005

IVR Cheat Sheet to Find a Human really helps you out if you’re living in the US and want to talk to a human on the phone instead of punching numbers and speaking to a machine.

They’re not all that much used here in Norway, instead you get “You’re currently number 76 in the queue” which is just as boooooring.

Hyperthreading hurts server performance

Monday, November 21st, 2005

ZDNet has a story about how hyperthreading isn’t working like it’s advertised.

> Intel had stated that hyperthreading’s performance advantages would show once threaded software became available, but it appears that in some cases the opposite is true

It seems that most developers of heavily multi-threaded software are suggesting that hyperthreading be disabled to improve performance under heavy load. Kinda strange, as hyperthreading is claimed to increase performance of multi-threaded software, and is enabled by default on newer processors.
