Entertainment industry ‘trying to hijack data retention directive’ – ZDNet UK News

> In a move a digital rights group is calling ‘a gross affront to civil liberties and human rights’, media firms want to amend the proposed data retention directive so they can bring criminal prosecutions for copyright violation

They’re lobbying to allow the directive to be used for just about everything, instead of just serious criminal offences such as terrorism and organized crime.

Combined with the upcoming IPRED2 legislation it could create a EU wide criminal offence for intellectual property infringement (p2p).

If the directive is passed in the EU, it will force ISP and telecom operators to store customer data for at least a year.
