I just set up a 64 kbit-ish Ogg stream for our little internet radio, and all I can say is wow! I am impressed. It sounds way better than a 64 kbit MP3 stream. The meta-data system is actually well thought out, instead of hacked in like it is with Shoutcast.
I’m also quite in love with Icecast2, especially the multiple mountpoints which allow me to broadcast as many streams as I want all from the same server. With Shoutcast, you need to have one server running per stream which causes all kind of problems when you try to set it all up.
If I could convince my listeners that Ogg is superior to MP3, at least on bitrates suitable for streaming, I’d probably re-code my MP3 collection, ditch Shoutcast, and go open source all the way. I know re-coding MP3′s to Ogg is sorta waste, but very little, if any, of what we broadcast is available on CD. I’ve got the disk space, so maybe I should give it a go and see if our listeners even notice?
